Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary
Mulliner Bentley's bespoke coachbuilding unit has designed a unique keycase to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the company. Made from Dark Stained Walnut and Piano Black veneer, it includes a flying "B" paperweight, a set keys, and a brochure with never-before-seen 1930 8 Litre images.
It's a great present to welcome a new owner into their luxurious vehicle.
Aesthetics
Bentley is a company which takes its aesthetics seriously. This is evident in the precise positioning of its quilting, the use of leather from leftovers from cattle and sustainable-managed forests, and the ingenuous patterns of its levers. A car like the Continental GT W12 beckons as you take it in and showcases its stunning sculptural design and power by carefully curated lighting.
The Continental GT is the most sophisticated open-top Bentley ever made. Its rear tonneau for instance, displayed the largest piece of book-matched, dark-stained Burr Walnut veneer ever applied to the production Bentley. Similarly, the electrically-operated glass sunroof and champagne cooler that incorporated hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal bottles marked a new benchmark in luxury and innovation.
Bentley is the most sought-after car brand worldwide due to its distinctive design and quality. The company continues to push the boundaries with the latest technology and workmanship, such as the introduction of an instrument cluster that is digital with an electric tilt-opening back glass sunroof, a custom-designed docking station for Apple iPads and electrochromic smart glass that can be switched between opaque and transparent with the push of an arrow.
Bentley celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019, one hundred years after it was established. The marque, which is owned by Volkswagen alone following years of tense relations with BMW and Volkswagen, had planned a variety of special launches and events to mark this milestone. Prior to pandemic planning taking center stage, the marque held a series of special events and launches planned to commemorate this historic occasion.
Design
Bentley is known for its extravagant and lavish cars, but even the keys are designed to make a statement. The Bentayga key is made from sterling silver. It has an oversized 'B' logo that lets everyone know you drive a Bentley. It's also engraved with the years 1919 and 2019 to commemorate the company's centenary.
Bentley Mulliner has redesigned and created the Mulsanne to be the ultimate Grand Touring vehicle. It features two opposing pairs of rear seats that were modelled on luxury private aircraft that provide passengers with unbeatable comfort and privacy. A customized heating, air conditioning and ventilation system was designed to give each passenger the ideal climate control setting.
Alongside a range of refined styling updates as well as a suite of stylishly executed styling revisions, the Mulsanne is powered by twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre W12 engine capable of producing 560bhp and 479lbft of torque. This colossal power is complemented by a brand new suspension system that provides Bentley's hushed, quiet ride.
In celebration of its Centenary, Bentley introduced a bespoke specification known as the Centenary Specification for cars manufactured in 2019. The cabin is equipped with cross-stitching and contrast stitching in Centenary Gold throughout. The Bentley Wings on the headrests and seats are embossed in Centenary Gold, adding to the feeling of celebration. The Centenary Specification also includes a bespoke Bentley keycase, which completes the Bentley experience.
Function
The Bentley Mulsanne Key comes with two buttons that open the trunk, and the other that starts the vehicle. It also has a switch to turn on the parking break. The knob can be used to fold or unfold the mirrors when parking in a tight spot. This feature can help you get into and out of the car more quickly.
The key is made from vegetable tanned leather and takes over two days to craft each one. The key is cut by hand, shaped, stitched to seal, and polished to give a superior result. It is robust and compact, and will fit the Bentley key perfectly. Its design is similar to that of the Volkswagen Phaeton large car's key, but it feels much heavier and has a more luxurious feel.
Secure-A-Key is also included to help stop keyless entry theft. This device is inserted into the remote-control key fob and will shut it off after a few minutes of inactivity, which prevents thieves from transmitting the frequency of the key to other devices that can unlock and start the vehicle.

Personalisation
Bentley's bespoke division, Mulliner, allows customers to design their own car. Customers sit at a set of images, referred to "mood stations" and choose a selection of photos ranging from picturesque vistas to sporting events - that will inspire them to design their own. As each selection is made, a pattern appears and reveals the design and color preferences for the custom Bentley.
The guests receive a key case made by hand that contains the R.F.I.D. enabled key cards. Keys can be adorned with Bentley Muliner Personalised welcome lamps that illuminate the path of the door's opening. They are adorned with the owner's name or logo as they approach the car.
Bentley estimates that it requires 500 man-hours to build and put together a Mulsanne. The reluctance to embrace modern technology is the primary factor to this time-consuming task. The Crewe factory workers don't utilize a machine for arranging perfectly matched leather seats. Instead they do it by hand. Instead of using the car's built-in sensors guide it to perpendicular and parallel parking spots, drivers have to do it by hand.
At the event, Bentley showcased its Mulliner personalization capabilities by presenting a special example - the Mulsanne W.O. The Mulsanne W.O. Edition pays homage to founder William Osler Bentley. The limited edition cars are available in 100. one key that features an image of the 1930 8 Litre's crankshaft.
